IAFE - Networking and Fun for Everyone!

"We bring joy to peoples lives!" That insightful yet simple quote is from Doug Lofstrom, Vice-President for the Orange County Fair & Event Center during the workshop Guest Hospitality Experience Programs, co-hosted with Jim Laurendeau, Director of Programming at the Calgary Stampede, a leader in guest hospitality. This was but one of the many educational workshops available to the attendees. North American Midway Entertainment took the opportunity to attend a few of these to learn what, when, and how we can make the industry better, safer, and maybe even, more fun! The amusement industry is unique in that it loves to share its secrets with others in the same field. Our goal is the same – making our guests happy.
North American Midway Entertainment is a proud sponsor of the IAFE and this year sponsored the Competitive Exhibits Award, which was presented by Jeff Blomsness, Co-CEO. Jeff, in association with the OABA, was the presenter for the Keynote Speaker, Joel Manby, during the Wednesday General Session. Manby, CEO of Herschend Family Entertainment is a motivational speaker and was featured on the CBS television show, "Undercover Boss."
Congratulations to all of our Fairs and to the contest winners…The Big E, Kansas State Fair, Walworth County Fair, Dubuque County Fair, Kentucky State Fair, Westerner Days Fair and Exposition, Indiana State Fair and the South Carolina State Fair. Top notch!

The Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (CAFE) 85thConvention, was held in partnership with the host Western Fair District in London, Ontario from November 16th to 19th, 2011.
Over 250 delegates from over 100 fairs from across Canada gathered to attend seminars, network and discover new ideas. North American Midway Entertainment was represented by Danny and Diane Huston, Tony and Daphne Diaz, Bea and Beth Negus and Scooter Korek.
The CAFE National Awards Program objectives are to recognize fairs and exhibitions and individuals through leadership, innovation and positive results. The CAFE encourages all categories of members to enter nominations for the National Awards because you all do such great work throughout the year! These awards are presented to members each year at the Annual C.A.F.E. Convention. In the category of "Service Member of the Year" the award recognizes the member who is deemed to have made the most significant overall contribution to the industry over the past year. The years honor deservingly went to our very own Tony Diaz, the President of the International Unit. Tony heads up NAME presentation and product in Canada by attending 8 major fairs and exhibitions. In 2011 NAME’s family of Canadian fairs set all time ride revenue records in 7 of those 8 events, an outstanding achievement in its own right. Since the inception of NAME in 2005 NAME has increased fair revenues by 42% under Tony’s leadership.
The Roll of Honour is the most prestigious C.A.F.E. award that recognizes distinguished service to the Canadian Fair Industry. The award deservingly was accepted by our friend from the Calgary Stampede - Jim Hobart. Jim is hanging up his cowboy hat for the last time with the Stampede on December 31st of this year. Jim has been a valuable asset not only to the Calgary Stampede but moreover to the fair industry in general since 1993. We at NAME wish Jim all the best with his retirement and some deserved time off to spend at the hockey rink trying to put the puck in the net and some time with his family. We will miss our man in Washington.
The Canadian Youth Talent Competition (CYTC) is an annual event presented by the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions since 1991. It celebrates the performing arts talents of Canada's youth. Young Canadians between 13 and 21, representing thirteen zones from across Canada, perform their way from the local fair to the provincial zone level and then on to the National Finals. North American Midway Entertainment is the proud major sponsor of the competition. Some past winners of this now great Canadian institution have included; Jim Creeggan – Barenaked Ladies, Alanis Morissette – Singer / Songwriter; Paul Brandt - Singer / Songwriter, Michael Bublé - Singer / Songwriter. The National Youth Talent Finals is proud of its short heritage and is dedicated to the gifted youth of Canada who exhibit extraordinary talent and give those youths an opportunity to showcase their talent on a National scale.
On Friday evening after the National Youth Talent Shows, Tony and Danny hosted 50 of our friends from fairs across Canada to dinner at Michaels on the Thames restaurant in London. The dining room was filled with laughter and impromptu serenades from Jack the proprietor of the restaurant. Fantastic food, palatable sprits, recycling stories and great camaraderie topped off a fantastic evening.
Hats off to the good folks in London and those involved with the CAFE for a great convention!

The ADA of Indiana celebrated its 80th birthday this year at the Indiana State Fair and there was a big unveiling inside the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion – a giant cheese birthday cake. The artwork used over 1420 pounds of Indiana-produced cheese and was sculpted by only one of three cheese sculptors in the world, Sarah Kaufmann, aka, “the Cheese Lady.”“The big 80 itself weighs 200 pounds. It's just a big symbol of how proud we are of Indiana Dairy Heritage and nutrition Education," said cheese artist Sarah Kaufman. The American Dairy Association of Indiana and the state’s dairy farm families sponsor the sculpture.Social Media was all-aflutter at this year’s fair. The Indiana State Fair App was back debuting QR (Quick Response) codes that could be scanned by smartphones users, which would take them to different mobile pages that detailed discounts, daily highlights and other daily Fair information. The app featured event listings, an interactive fair map, midway ride prices and locations of popular food vendors along with parking, restrooms and ATM’s, the app was downloaded over 6700 times to assist users at the Indiana State Fair. The Indiana State Fair was also on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare and a Blog to read behind-the-scenes fair stories. A remarkable feat, the Indiana State Fair was trending nationally in the top ten. After the tragic accident, social media was used to keep people up-to-date on everything regarding the fair, concerts; it also was used to set up a Remembrance Fund for the families affected by the tragedy. Please go to www.cicf.org (http://www.cicf.org/) to donate. What is a Hoosier? Ask any Indiana resident and they will say ‘that’s me’. They might also tell you that a Hoosier has heart and soul and that they stand by one another and come together during times of turmoil. The entire North American Midway Entertainment team wishes to express their heartfelt condolences to those who are hurting in Indiana from the tragic accident. We are praying for their healing and keeping them in our hearts.

2011 Queen City Ex- All NEW Record Ride Revenue

Whether you came to ride the new “Spin Out”, sink your teeth into the “latest craze” The Glazed Donut Bacon Cheeseburger or play the newest midway game “Stinky Feet”; The Queen City Ex offered value, big name entertainment and a long list of “what’s new and exciting”. Combine all of this with almost perfect fair weather and the result was yet another new ride revenue record for North American Midway Entertainment. The pre-sale ride all day pass sales were up 4%. Overall fair attendance was down slightly 2%. When the Queen City Ex transformed into a 5 day from a 6-day fair in 2006 the attendance dropped between 10-20% for the first 2 years, but has gradually rebounded to attendance numbers comparable to the 6-day attendance numbers in 2010 and 2011.The top two concerts of the Ex were Dierks Bentley - drawing over 10,000 fans and Down With Webster drawing over 9000 fans. Other concerts included Marianas Trench, April Wine and the Queen City Kids, Great White, Warrant & Slaughter. New attractions on the grounds this year included the Boogey Man Brigade FMX motocross show, the Trampoline Wall, the Chinese Acrobats, Stampede Wrestling, Glazed Donut Burger, Colossal Onion, the Spin Out, Bob’s Space Racers “Stinky Feet” game and “Flip A Chick”.North American Midway thanks the Queen City Ex immensely for having the fairgrounds and their team prepared for the tight timeline of the midway move-in. The show leaves the Northlands property in Edmonton on Monday with the majority of equipment arriving Tuesday into Regina and the Queen City Ex opens early Wednesday. NAME transports several employees from Edmonton to Regina by air to ensure they get ample rest after tear down and are ready for the one-day set-up. Other mandatory requirements include doubling up on cranes and forklifts and hiring additional labor. Thankfully when we arrive to Regina, hundreds of workers are waiting on the fairgrounds seeking employment. The Queen City Ex implemented new security measures that they intend to expand upon for future shows as well to enhance overall security for their facility. Security performed random searches at the two main walk-in gates to ensure there were no weapons, outside alcohol or any other items deemed dangerous to the public entering the grounds. During peak hours the Ex had heightened presence of security guards and police officers. A new “texting” element was added, allowing fairgoers to text directly to security. Security cameras were also installed throughout the grounds. Additionally they added Greg Johnson the "Tornado Hunter" to their team. Greg monitored all weather during the Ex, his state of the art equipment and knowledge help predict inclement weather well before arrival. Severe weather didn't actually hit the fairgrounds this year, but the close proximity of such storms kept some fairgoers home on the Saturday. Saturday is the busiest day of the event and attendance dropped by 12 percent from the previous year because of weather in the region. The Queen City Ex supports many local charitable groups during and throughout the Ex. This year they donated over 1000 gate admissions and 200 Daytrippers to local charities. The local Dolphins Swim Team work for their funds as they are hired as the official “Clean Team” of the Queen City Ex, making it their largest team fundraiser of the year. The Queen City Kinsmen are a sixty-year tradition of the Ex with their ever-popular Car Raffle. This was the 128th Provincial Exhibition in Regina and it attracted 70% of the people living within a 60 km radius.Last and most definitely not least, we celebrated the 50th birthday of our International Unit President, Tony Diaz at the Queen City Ex. It was a memorable surprise evening for Tony, planned by his wife Daphne. The evening included surprise attendees, a 50th birthday video presentation along with divine cuisine. Happy 50th Tony.

The team at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum have once again put on a fabulous show for the Gulf Coast area. Not only did we have a new act, Street Beat, a funky diverse dance act with audience participation (www.streetbeattheshow.com (http://www.streetbeattheshow.com/)) but contributing once again was Game Hype who also dedicated their time for our 7th annual NAME summertime jamboree.
One of the biggest highlights of our company’s annual jamboree is the Tug-of-War competition between the “management and ride personnel”. Management was again victorious in the competition, however we did notice the one ride operator tugging on the wrong side of the rope. Congratulations also to the “concession girls vs. the ticket sellers,” who were also victorious!
One of the most fascinating events was the BBQ cook-off. 17 contestants entered and tasting all 17 briskets and bbq was a job in itself but the ultimate winner was a one -man show deserving all but one of the trophies, “Jones Be Smokin”.
North American Midway Entertainment has a long-standing relationship with the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and we really appreciate their hospitality every year and making our employee jamboree so much fun.

Manitobans Set New Attendance Records

After a flood-ridden spring came perfect weather in the month of June for Manitoba. Records were broken right across the board at the Manitoba Summer Fair in Brandon, MB and the Red River Ex in Winnipeg, MB. Garth Rogerson, CEO, Red River Ex expects the final tally of attendance to be 25 percent beyond 2010 attendance and beyond the 1997 record attendance.
The Red River Ex has become such a community driven and focused event. "You'll start to see a lot more community engagement, we are three years into our five year plan and that was to put the exhibit back in the exhibition and thus make Manitoba’s largest annual fair more appealing to families and fairgoers. " says Rogerson. "The idea is, people are passionate about the things they do so let's help them showcase that."
This year a record of 1500 volunteers joined forces to help with special exhibits and shows and featured healthy living activities. Fairgoers experienced their very own community involvement at the Extreme dog show, Humane Society’s new Barn Buddy Program, the Ex’s first ever Habitat for Humanity house, which was built on-site during the Ex solely by volunteers and then moved to its permanent location in the city. Other exciting exhibits were the Aussie Kingdom featuring kangaroos and other wonderful animals from down under, the Pirates of the Sky, who revolve head-over-heels 50 feet in the air on a giant aerial anchor, David "The Bullet" Smith, "highest-flying human cannonball in the world, Louisiania chef Scott Landry, and the one-day match in front of the Giant Wheel featuring WWF superstar The Honkey Tonk.
Free evening concerts included Dean Brody & High Valley, Fefe Dobson, April Wine, Bedouin Soundclash, Shane Yellowbird & Don Amero, B.J. Thomas, My Darkest Days, Colin Raye, Down With Webster and Fred Penner.
North American Midway Entertainment thanks the Red River Exhibition and The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority who provided our NAME employees with free NRT kits (Nicotine Replacement Therapy). The Health Authority had doctors and pharmacists present a private seminar for employees who were willing to take on the quit smoking challenge and provided them all with a kit that included a three day supply of nicotine gum and patches. NAME has 40 employees taking the quit smoking challenge. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority was a large part of the GoForHealthExpo at the Red River Exhibition where they had endless interactive exhibits and displays giving fairgoers information and demonstrations on how to lead a healthier lifestyle.

The 99th Calgary Stampede opened up with the Calgary Stampede Showband and mounted guards leading the entrance of Prince William and Kate’s arrival atop a large carriage to the BMO Center. The couple both sporting blue jeans, belt buckles, western shirts and white cowboy hats. Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper hosted a private reception for the Royals, which included bull riding, chuckwagon demonstrations and sheep riding. Following they were entertained by the Young Canadians, Canadian musician Paul Brandt and a presentation to the Treaty 7 First Nations people of Canada. The Royal couple was truly welcomed with a great introduction to western heritage and Canadian warmth and generosity. The Royals also participated in the Calgary Stampede Parade, officially launching the parade when they joined hands and pushed the “klaxon” — the horn traditionally used to start the chuckwagon races. The parade marshal was Canadian Paralympian, Man in Motion, Rick Hansen who has won 19 international wheelchair marathons and has wheeled through 34 countries to raise awareness for spinal cord injury. The parade route is close to 3 miles and is one of the largest in the world.
2011 attendance for the Calgary Stampede was 1,174,697, up 29,303 over last year. No individual day records were set and the total fell short of the 2006 record of 1,262,518. However it was still one of the best ones yet.
This year’s Calgary Stampede was a little Buckaroo’s dream come true. I spent a few days checking out all of things to see and do for the little ones. Parents had many opportunities at big savings when it came to the midway. Safeway stores, and Costco both offered deep discounts on ride coupons and unlimited ride wristbands in advance. Additionally on the BMO Kid’s Day, we offered 30 coupons for $20.00 on-site.
Starting on the midway in our Kiddieland, we featured 25 rides featuring the new Mini Monster Trucks, owned and operated by West Coast Amusements. Also new was Flip-A-Chick, a new hilarious midway game where you try and hit the rubber chicken into the soup pot. North American Midway was frying up a storm with the new concession “The Spiral Spud”- The Picasso of potatoes. Thousands of fairgoer’s enjoyed these thinly sliced, lightly fried and piled high spuds. We were serving up almost every version of the French fry, from curly, fully loaded to the original French cut. Other big midway indulgences in the calorie department included the glazed donut burger and deep-fried pop tarts.
Great experiences for kids were unlimited; Bell Midway Circus, Indian Village, Kid’s Chuckwagon Challenge, Cattle Trail, Stampede Marching Bands and Showbands, BMO Kid’s Zone, the ENMAX ice show featuring Gold Medalists, Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, the Canadian Forces Display and the Human Cannonball- the highest flying in the world. These being only a small fraction of the activities available on-grounds. Enter the “Big Four Building” and rest and relax while your children enjoy many of their favorite activities such as bouncing on giant inflatables, Play-Doh, button making, face painting, or take in one of the kids shows on the Buckaroos Stage.
Concert entertainment was non-stop with top performers on stage in the Saddledome and up to four different free concerts a day on the Coca Cola Stage. The Saddledome featured New Kids on The Block and Backstreet Boys, Sugarland, Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney. The Coca Cola Stage had a total of 41 different free shows and concerts featuring artists such as Thomas and Friends, Barney, These Kids Wear Crowns, My Darkest Days, Fefe Dobson, Finger Eleven, My Little Pony, The Big Comfy Couch, Kevin Costner and Modern West, Down with Webster, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Heebee Jeebee’s and more.

A great advance sale program, fair management, sunshine and a fully stocked entertainment line-up contributed to the second best year ever at the Biloxi Crawfish Festival.
The Mississippi Coast Coliseum and North American Midway Entertainment gave away over $5000 in cash and prizes during the Easter Egg Hunt, which drew over 1500 children. Another main highlight was the Crawfish cook-off, in which dozens of teams competed for cash and prizes. Headliner entertainment included Easton Corbin, Jamey Johnson, Justin Moore and Eric Church. North American Midway hosted six pay-one-price promotions during the festival. North American Midway and the Mississippi Coast Coliseum are extending their partnership through 2014.
The Annual Thibodaux Fireman’s Fair is a family tradition and an event which helps raise monies for the Thibodaux Fire Departments day-to-day operations. This year’s event was celebrated with record breaking support from the community. Afterall who wouldn’t want to enjoy Bucky Covington, Mark Chestnut, exciting midway attractions, delicious jambalaya, red beans, shrimp stew and PO Boys in the warm southern sunshine. The event finished in historic style with the harmony of fire trucks, floats and marching bands parading down the lawn chair bordered streets of Thibadeaux. Laissez les Bon Temps Roulez! (Let the good times roll).
Did You Know? CAJUN ('ka:-j@n), n. A person of French Canadian descent born or living along the bayous, marshes, and prairies of southern Louisiana. The word Cajun began in 19th century Acadie (now Nova Scotia, Canada) when the Acadians began to arrive. The French of noble ancestry would say, "les Acadiens", while some referred to the Acadians as "le 'Cadiens", dropping the "A". Later came the Americans who could not pronounce "Acadien" or "'Cadien", so the word "Cajun" was born. The 700,000 Cajuns (http://www.louisianatravel.com/where_to_go/cajun_country) who live in South Louisiana are descendants of French Canadians. (No wonder they are so much fun!)

Alligator on a stick? Check! Chocolate covered bacon? Got it! Pizza in a cone? You bet! Well, if that doesn’t tempt your palate, the Ethnic Village can and did! Each year, the Illinois State Fair features different countries from around the world and is a definite must eat featuring Romanian, Jamaican, Indian and many others. And along with the great food, they had some great entertainment as well. The Colgate Country Showdown competition took place there for a chance to be the next big country star and a chance for $100,000 – wow!
Battle of the Bands! More talent erupted in the form of the biggest teen band competition in Illinois with over 120 bands competing to win the event. All finalists played at The Shed and a new Champion was crowned on the 21st. MTV’s MADE was at the Fair for casting calls for the show this season and Radio Disney broadcast live from the Fair, as well.
Unfortunately, due to heavy rains and lightning, both Friday night concerts had to be cancelled; Lady Antebellum and Cheap Trick, but fairgoers still enjoyed Selena Gomez, Kiss, Shinedown, Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker and others.
North American Midway Entertainment featured 52 rides at this year’s event, including the permanent attractions in the Adventure Village. The top five rides included Pharoah’s Fury, Himalaya, Century Wheel, Freak Out and the Orbiter.
According to statistics, more fairgoers attended the festivities than last year. Rock On!

The Tennessee State Fair closed its final year at the Tennessee Fairgrounds with record- breaking numbers and perfect fair weather. Over 61,000 people attended the Fair on the last Saturday setting a single-night record for the fair’s 155-year history. Attendance overall was up 18% from 2008 and 19% over last year. Most of the fairgoers were a bit disappointed that this was going to be last year at the fairgrounds and signed a petition to keep the Fair alive along with its traditions.
This year, the Fair set atop the hill at the Fairgrounds with all the rides, foods, activities and shows within easy walking distance of each other making it “a lot more personal”, said Ronnie Netterfield of Netterfield Foods who was very pleased with the overall outcome of this year’s Fair.
The Fair was full of fun contests such as the Ice Cream Eating, Soccer Juggling, Hula Hoop, Egg Toss, Pedometer Challenge and more. The annual Karaoke Showdown was a must see as well. Third place finisher and winner of $150 was one of our very own, Mega Drop ride operator, Jeff Hammond. Congrats!
As most of you know, on May 1st, 2010, Nashville was victim to floods that devastated the city, destroying many homes, schools, historic landmarks and livelihoods. The Lighthouse Christian Academy (Pre-k thru 12th grade) was seen on the news floating down Interstate 24 during the flood. ABC and the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” came to Nashville to rebuild their school and brought around 350 students, teachers and parents to visit the Fair while the school was under construction. North American Midway Entertainment provided free rides for the entire school while in the company of country star Leann Rimes and Paul DiMeo of “Extreme Makeover”.
The location of future fairs may be uncertain, but “the Tennessee State Fair will live on,” says Chrysty Fortner, Director of Sponsorships for Rockhouse Partners. Of the 155 year history of the Fair, 104 years have been at the Fairgrounds but, she says, “it is time for a new beginning.” The new state fair board (The Tennessee State Fair Association) is now a not-for-profit organization charged with finding a new home for the State Fair.

The Red River Exhibition in Winnipeg, MB proved to be a first class exhibition experience combined with value for the whole family. North American Midway offered a ten-ride card for $20.00 available only if purchased in advance and the Fair offered four days where fairgoers could enter the Ex for only $5.00 before 5pm. The Exhibition even took it one step further and offered a free pancake breakfast and gate admission on Father’s Day and free gate admission for three hours on “Aboriginal Day”. These great values were only the beginning of what was the best line-up ever inside the gates at the Red River Exhibition. The brand-new $3 million, 39,000 sq ft building “Exhibition Place” was unveiled to fairgoers. Exhibition Place housed “Savoir-Faire” – a food and wine experience featuring Manitoba delicacies and celebrity chefs. Also displayed in Exhibition Place were paintings, drawings, photography and sculptures created by Manitoba amateur artists. The second new structure was “Centreplace Manitoba” a 2,560 sq ft sustainable living building that was moved to the Exhibition grounds from the Vancouver Olympic site, where the building featured Manitoba during the 2010 Winter Games. A great new interactive exhibit included “The Fishing Pond” where children can practice catch and release in the fully stocked pond. And for the more daring fairgoer Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo with the “Giant Lizards of the World, including a seven foot crocodile and “The Live Shark Encounter” which featured a giant shark tank where the diver would actually get inside the tank with the shark. The Central Park free stage featured ten different concerts over the 10 nights, music varied from Canadian rock, country, and aboriginal to Senior Idol. Senior Idol was a province wide talent search for the 50-plus crowd. “Active” packed entertainment included the Extreme Canines Stunt Dog Show and Gymnaestrada, a gymnastic display. Yoga and Tai Chi demonstrations were included in the “Ex In Motion’ exhibit promoting physical fitness and providing the first 100 visitors with free pedometers. North American Midway thanks the Red River Exhibition for their continued support and sponsorship of a “Best of Show” award for one chosen NAME employee. The lucky winner of a brand new ipod Touch was Stephane Van Breda from our midway pizza concession. Stephane was chosen for her exceptional customer service during the 10-day event.

North American Midway Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame Inductees

Tony Diaz, President, North American Midway opened the 98th Calgary Stampede to over 400 NAME employees on the Coca Cola Stage.
The opening ceremonies included the induction of the first two recipients into North American Midway's Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame. This is an award that is unprecedented and a feat that only those of many years of quality service in the amusement industry can achieve.
Hall of Fame recipients, Wayne Kunz and Don Larson have touched the lives of many people at North American Midway, the amusement industry and fairgoers all over North America.
These two individuals have and continue to share so much passion for this industry. They exhibit a genuine feeling for others, their employees, our customers and every person they come in contact with. They make our carnival a place to call "home".
They mentor, teach and help employees in every department. They empower all employees with the encouragement to try their best. Most importantly, they make sure everyone is apart of our team. This is sheer love and dedication.
If you were to ask either of them, how they achieved such great success in this industry, they would say "it was not me, it was each and every employee out here on this midway. They are the most important factors in our ability to achieve our goals".
Wayne was born on December 23rd, 1937 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and grew up in Wisconsin before moving to Tampa, FL as a teenager. He graduated from Brewster Tech High School in Tampa in 1957 and was captain of the football, basketball and track teams. He turned down a football scholarship from the #1 college football team in the nation at that time, Auburn University, to work for his father Al Kunz.
2010 marks his 63rd year in the amusement industry. Starting at the early age of 10, Wayne took tickets on rides on his parent's midway in Iowa. Wayne liked the idea of making money and would work the summers to save some money and go back to school. Wayne is one of the great characters of this industry. He has lived an adventure story of his own. In 1962, at the age of 25, he made his reputation and history in the carnival business by hauling the Skywheel from Birmingham, Alabama to Seattle, Washington to the Seattle's World Fair. Wayne traveled 3200 miles in five days.
After the World's Fair, which Wayne still holds the original ticket in his pocketbook; he became the Vice President of the newly named Century 21 Shows. He managed a unit for Century 21 Shows, one of the largest carnivals of its generation, for 25 years. He married Patricia "Tesha" Zielen from Elmhurst, Illinois during the Iowa State Fair on August 23rd, 1963. He and Tesha had 3 children; Scott, Kelly and Todd, and 5 grandchildren. Tesha is the love of his life. There is no one in the world that loves their wife more than Wayne loved Tesha. Wayne would drive 1000 miles in one night just to make it home to see his wife and drive 1000 miles back to the show the next day.
After Century 21 Shows was sold, he worked for the "Mighty Blue Grass Shows" for 28 years. Wayne has established himself, as one of the best "Ride Men' in our business. With his leadership skills and sheer determination, he has worked to make the carnival industry a respected and safe environment for its workers and patrons.
"Wayne shows the same passion for his family as he does his work ethics. Wayne is known to always help the little guy. He would take money out of his own pocket to make sure the show goes down the road. We all know that he will work all night to get the ride running and call everyone in the industry to find a ride part or information. Another true testament is that many others in the industry will call Wayne to find out how to get their rides running. You can ask anyone in this industry if they know Wayne Kunz and all of them will smile and say yes. No one has done what Wayne has done with his own hands in this industry." – Mike Williams, CEO NAME.
"What I have seen in this business- I could write a book" – Wayne Kunz.
"Wayne is one man in this industry that can drive past my winter quarters at 50 miles per hour without stopping and see every project I am working on and is quick to call me and tell me how I am suppose to be doing it"- Danny Menge, Unit Manager, NAME.
"I first met Wayne when he worked with Blue Grass Shows and he had just starting serving on the OABA's Board. At my first Annual OABA meeting in Tampa in 1995. Wayne saved the day and our meeting with his knowledge of generators as the hotel suffered a power outage. There was no one in the hotel's maintenance department on Saturday afternoon and then President Dominic Vivona started the meeting with candles. Their back-up generator did not kick-in until Wayne jammed a two-by-four under its power breaker switch and low and behold the hotel's electricity was on once again. He was rewarded with a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue and a free hotel stay. Wayne's most admirable trait, besides moving a show and his knowledge of rides, is the fact that everyone, from employee to owner, looks up to him and admire his spirit and love of this great industry." – Bob Johnson, President OABA.
"Wayne is one of the finest people in the world". -Tom Powell, legendary carnival ambassador.
"I have always been an early riser and would be on the fairgrounds before 7AM. The first person I would meet is Wayne with a big smile on his face and he would say, "Where have you been I have been at it for an hour?". After seeing Wayne I know we are going to have a great day and everything is taken care of because Wayne is making sure of it himself." – Phil Clarke, CEO Miami Dade County Fair.
"Our work may be judged by how many people come through our midway and leave happy or it can be judged on what we learn from each other in this unique business. If there is one person who has taught so many meaningful lessons to people on the road-it is Wayne Kunz- the man with the golden boxing glove around his neck. We all know him for his outgoing personality and the challenge to make every person smile. He also knows every thing that goes on around the midway and industry, just ask him. The carnival today is a far cry from what Wayne explains it to be back 60 years "it was a different ball game kid" when the farmers in Iowa would travel from the hills to enjoy the sideshows and ever-popular girl shows. Wayne has seen more wild and crazy things than one could ever dream of. He continues to be is a big part of our world at NAME and our industry and if you have not had a chance to meet him, I highly recommend you do so! Amber Swedgan Director of Media & Communications, NAME.
Don Larson
Don Larson walked onto the Calgary Stampede grounds in 1953. He is a father of two beautiful girls and a lifetime soul mate to his wife Mary Ann. He and Mary Ann have shared 48 years of wonderful marriage. Their world has been filled with family, friends and midways.
Don's career with the amusement business has now spanned almost 5 decades, starting when he was 15 years old with Royal American Shows. Don traveled on the Royal American Shows train to fairs and exhibitions where he learned the ropes of the business.
Don has had many jobs although he has always returned to the midway which is his true love. Don is a gambler at heart and enjoys being in charge of the gaming games. While other men at his age choose a big comfortable lazy boy, Don chooses a special spot right behind the games to keep an eye on things and train employees.
Not only has he raised two daughters on the road, he has raised many of other people's children. Don is known as "Grandpa" to hundreds of employees he has worked with over the years. A protective father, husband and boss some may say. He was always known to lock his daughters in the house trailer at night, where they would only be able to see the fireworks through the window.
This man means serious business. After a little health scare over the winter, we had all hoped that Don would slow down a little. However it was no shock was when he arrived on the midway in Winnipeg ready for another great season. However his daughter Jackie had a revised agenda for her father's work load. He lost the first battle with daughter Jackie, when he demanded a bunkroom to stay on the grounds and she demanded he sleep at home in his own bed every night. On teardown night, Don told Jackie he was going to stay until all of the game lumber was on the ground. Once again, Jackie handled it by telling him he wasn't going to see a single stick of lumber hit the ground.
Don is a constant professional and to quote Don directly "Anyone can get the money when it is busy – it's a good worker that can get the money when it is slow. "
Don will always be remembered for his game "Lucky Cans" at the Canadian National Exhibition, when he would hire only females and uniform them in tight white shirts that read "Lucky Cans".
Don is truly a card and a one of a kind.
"There is no other person more deserving to be inducted into our NAME Hall of Fame than our very own "Don Larson"- Tony Diaz, President, NAME.
